The Board of the MDCA is discussing the drafting of a Charter of Rights for those in fulltime private practice as a first step in ascertaining consultants’ rights and in an effort to achieve security of tenure for independent practitioners.
The contents currently under consideration include:
- Introduction (background and importance of a Charter of Rights)
- The role of the consultant in full-time private practice
- The advocacy role of the consultant
- Consultants as clinical leaders
- The consultant’s work environment
- Contractual arrangements for consultants
- Dignity and respect
The document may also address job planning, medical appraisal, full-time/flexible working, parental leave, wellbeing supports, long-term health conditions and career breaks.
