Charter of Rights

The Board of the MDCA is discussing the drafting of a Charter of Rights for those in fulltime private practice as a first step in ascertaining consultants’ rights and in an effort to achieve security of tenure for independent practitioners.

The contents currently under consideration include:

  • Introduction (background and importance of a Charter of Rights)
  • The role of the consultant in full-time private practice
  • The advocacy role of the consultant
  • Consultants as clinical leaders
  • The consultant’s work environment
  • Contractual arrangements for consultants
  • Dignity and respect

The document may also address job planning, medical appraisal, full-time/flexible working, parental leave, wellbeing supports, long-term health conditions and career breaks.

The Board would welcome comments and input from members. Submissions may be sent by email to info@mdca.ie
